Vietnam: Land of Timeless Charm and Rich Culture

Hanoi (Vietnam)

Hanoi Tips

When exploring Hanoi, it’s essential to be aware of common scams that travelers may encounter. Here are some tips to help you navigate your way through the city:
1. Beware of Scams : Be cautious of scams perpetrated by waiters and tuk-tuk drivers. Some may attempt to add extra charges to your bill or change prices unexpectedly. When negotiating with tuk-tuk drivers, clarify the agreed-upon rate and duration of the service to avoid misunderstandings. Additionally, be wary of individuals who feign injuries or fatigue to pressure you into paying more.

2. Practice Vigilance: Scammers may try to overcharge you, sometimes up to three times the normal price. Even if a service seems inexpensive, keep in mind the exchange rate and what you should reasonably expect to pay.

3. Airport Transfers: Consider arranging transportation from the airport to your accommodation in advance. This typically costs around $15-17, whereas a taxi driver with a meter may charge you more.

By staying alert and informed, you can better protect yourself from falling victim to scams while enjoying all that Hanoi has to offer.

Halong Bay

Halong Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers breathtaking natural scenery and a variety of activities for travelers to enjoy. While some opt for day trips, we recommend booking a 1 or 2-night tour offshore for a more immersive experience. These longer tours are less touristy and allow you to explore more areas and participate in a wider range of activities.

The journey from Hanoi to Halong Bay port takes approximately 4 hours by bus.

During your tour, you can look forward to the following activities:

  • Visit to the Oyster Farm: Witness the fascinating process of pearl cultivation, where oysters are implanted with polished shells and returned to the sea for several years before harvesting.
  • Kayaking: Explore the stunning limestone karsts and hidden caves of Halong Bay up close by kayak.
  • Hiking: Embark on a hike to the peak of a small island for panoramic views of the bay.
  • Beach Relaxation: Unwind on the pristine beaches and soak in the natural beauty surrounding you.
  • Cycling: Discover the charm of local villages and scenic landscapes by cycling through the countryside.
It’s important to note that while there are various cruise options available with different levels of comfort, prices may vary accordingly. Additionally, it’s advisable to triple-check the tour itinerary with the agency to ensure clarity on activities and arrangements.

For multi-day trips, be mindful of your luggage during transfers between boats and hotels to prevent any potential loss.

By planning ahead and staying informed, you can make the most of your Halong Bay experience and create lasting memories in this stunning destination.

The companies selling the tours might show you other picture, or not be sure about the program. Tours over few days are usually mixed up with people starting tours from different days and for different activities. It is not very well organized and you might have to wait couple of hours and do twice the same activity. Triple check with the tour agency what you are playing for. If you go for few day trip and you constantly move from places as boat and hotel, keep an eye if your luggage is following you, as it could easily get lost in between 2 boats: one going north, one going south.

What is the most traditional Vietnamese dish known over the world?

Pho is a traditional Vietnamese noodle soup characterized by its savory broth, rice noodles, and fresh herbs. To cook it at home, start by simmering beef or chicken bones with aromatics like ginger and onion to create a flavorful broth. Then, assemble your bowl with cooked noodles, thinly sliced meat, and garnishes such as bean sprouts, cilantro, and lime. Finally, ladle the hot broth over the ingredients and serve with hoisin sauce, Sriracha, and fresh lime wedges on the side for added flavor.
